What is Phosphorus?
Phosphorus is one of three primary nutrients needed for healthy turf growth. It stimulates early root growth, promotes early plant vigor and hastens maturity. However, there is a growing environmental concern about phosphorus runoff from lawn fertilizer misapplication. Many landscapes have adequate phosphorus levels to maintain established turf. If you do have adequate phosphorus levels in your soil, you can use phosphorus-free fertilizers, like Vigoro® Super Green™ Lawn Fertilizer, which is specially formulated to complement phosphorus already present in most soils.
Phosphorus in Responsible Lawn Care
Phosphorus is the primary nutrient found to cause the growth of algae and aquatic weeds in streams and lakes. Increased levels of algae and aquatic weeds reduce the amount of oxygen in the water and can ultimately threaten fish and those animals that rely on them for food. Phosphorus can come from a variety of sources, including plant residues, discharge from municipal waste treatment systems, residential septic systems, animal wastes and runoff from off-target fertilizer applications.
Use phosphorus-free fertilizers as part of an environmentally responsible lawn care program. It's also important to select the proper fertilizer, follow the directions for use on your fertilizer's label, and sweep any fertilizer or grass clippings that land on your sidewalk or driveway back onto your lawn. Grass clippings contain significant levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients that can be recycled back to your soil. Recycling grass clippings also reduces domestic yard waste sent to landfills.
