- A healthy, thick lawn is able to defend itself against weeds far better than an underwatered, under-fertilized lawn.
- A healthy lawn is more drought resistant and recovers more quickly after long dry periods.
- Grass helps fight pollution by trapping dust and pollen, and by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gaseous pollutants that contribute to the greenhouse effect.
- A healthy lawn reduces stormwater runoff, recharges ground water, and prevents erosion of topsoil.
- Every 25 square feet of lawn produces enough oxygen each day for one person.
- A well maintained lawn can reduce surface temperatures by 30 to 40 degrees compared to bare soil and 50 to 70 degrees compared with streets and driveways.
- A well maintained lawn is a major factor in home sales.
The three main components to basic lawn care are fertilization, proper watering, and proper mowing.
1. Fertilizing
- It is important to fertilize your lawn several times a year. The first fertilizer application should be in the spring so that your lawn gets the nutrients it needs as it enters the growing season.
- A well fertilized lawn helps prevent weeds.
- What do the numbers on the fertilizer bag mean?
- The numbers on the front of the fertilizer package (i.e., 10-10-10 or 28-3-3) indicate the percentage of primary nutrients — nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium — in the bag.
- The first number represents nitrogen (N), which is the primary nutrient for growth and greening.
- The second, phosphorus (P), aids in root development and strengthens the plant. Used correctly, this nutrient is very beneficial. However, there have been environmental concerns around misused phosphorus impacting lakes, rivers and bays. As with all fertilizers, please follow the instructions and use the product responsibly.
- The third number, potassium (K), strengthens plants against stresses such as cold temperatures, drought and disease.
2. Watering
- We recommend watering your lawn at a rate of one inch per week (in the absence of rainfall), if possible.
- One deep watering is more effective than multiple shallow waterings because it promotes deeper root growth and greater drought resistance.
- For best results, water early in the morning to reduce loss of water from evaporation.
- For tips on handling a drought, please see Water Conservation Tips from the makers of Vigoro® products.
3. Mowing
- To avoid stressing your lawn do not remove more than one-third of the height of the grass at any one mowing event. Mowing your lawn at the correct height is an important step in controlling weeds and promoting root growth.
- As part of a responsible lawn care program, be sure to return grass clippings to your lawn to replenish phosphorus and other nutrients and keep lawn refuse out of landfills.
- Be responsible. Always read and follow instructions on lawn care products. Sweep or blow fertilizer that has landed on the street, driveway or sidewalk back onto the lawn. This is one way to prevent fertilizer from entering local waters.
- Never apply lawn care products by hand. Your local Home Depot associate will help you find the correct spreader.
- Look for controlled-release nitrogen in fertilizers such as Vigoro® Super Green™ Lawn Fertilizer. Controlled-release nitrogen feeds over an extended period of time, feeding plants for several months.
